A Little Taste of History - Harvey's Bakery

Friday, January 3, 2025

Harvey’s Bakery has been a staple in the heart of downtown Dover for over 90 years. In 1932 Harvey Bernier opened three locations across the Seacoast (Dover, Rochester, and Portsmouth). One of his employees, Ray Guillemette (then just a high schooler) fell in love with the business of baking so much that in 1954 he took over ownership and continued to grow this business.

In 1974, Ray saw a need for a downtown coffee shop, opening Harvey’s Coffee Shop right next door to the bakery. With the help of his wife and children, they’ve grown this warm and inviting breakfast stop along Dover’s main street.

When you step inside the brick façade of Harvey’s, the smell of freshly baked bread immediately hits you in the face. The long glass display cases show that morning’s fresh goods: mini blueberry loaf muffins, indulgent puffed pastries, and often a large selection of sweet pies. And let’s not forget the forever famous Maple Squares that are sweet and haven’t changed in decades. Proof that you don’t change a perfect recipe.

In 2018, the city proclaimed the area in front of Harvey’s as “Maple Square”, in honor of all the Guillemette family’s community service and contributions to Dover. There’s a reason that Harvey’s has been around for almost 100 years, their recipes are classic and give that grandma-just-baked-it feel. Whether its a cinnamon sugar dusted donut or the perfect coffee cake to accompany a hot cup of coffee, it all feels homey and warm.

If you’re looking for a little slice of historic Dover, you need not look any further than the illuminated glass bakery cases of Harvey’s on Central Avenue.
